Don’t end up paying for something you did not get

Friday, November 9th, 2007

I’m sure many have experienced being asked by a friend or relative to co-sign a loan. And, even if we don’t really like it, we usually oblige with the thought that we are just co-makers. The belief is that we are only going to have problems if the principal will refuse to pay. Not necessarily.

A friend of mine, Nelson Getigan, a lawyer and entrepreneur, warns us of the consequences. In an article entitled “The Unknowing Debtor: A Discussion on the Liability of Co-makers“, he talks about Palmares vs. Court of Appeals, a decision of the Philippine Supreme Court which says that a creditor may go after the co-maker even without going after the principal first.

The article is posted at www.gccs.com.ph, the official website of GCCS and Associates, a company specializing in debt collection and credit investigation here in the Philippines. It is the first of a series of articles related to our laws on debt collection. The lesson is that we should know our rights and avoid paying for someone else’s loan.

Rounded corners for pictures using Photoshop

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

A month or so ago, I helped a friend set up a website for his debt collection agency at www.gccs.com.ph. As I am not a professional web designer, I used a free web template downloaded from the net. The design called for some pictures with rounded corners. Obviously, I didn’t know how to make them. But, like in many other instances, I found the answer just by searching for it on the net. There are all talks about the integration of ASEAN, politically, economically, socially, geographically, and any other *ally you can think of. Batasayti, the project

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

A few days ago I started Batasayti, a personal blog/project which aims to compile material on information technology (IT) law and policy in the Philippines and in other Asian countries. Hopefully, the blog in time will be of good use to IT practitioners, law students, and others. If you support this project, please link to the blog using the text “information technology law Philippines”. By doing so, you will help increase the searchability of the information contained there. You may also point out material which you feel should be included in the compilation. I will add them ASAP. Thanks ahead for the help.

Game Addiction is Not an Addiction, says experts

As simple as that. Game Addiction as we commonly call someone playing (video/online) games as if there’s no tomorrow, is still out of the “addiction book” of the doctors. Isn’t that neat? Further showing how politicians and some members of the media are just using this topic so they have something to say, and have something to report? All that talk, just so people will think they are responsible, or maintain their reputation, without any consideration the result the gaming industry can contribute to the economy, and the positive effects of gaming.

Quoting:
“…more study is needed before excessive use of video and online games - a problem that affects about 10 percent of players - could be considered a mental illness.”

Weak Link between Game Addiction and Aggression

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Or let me rephrase it, there evidence is weak linking game addiction and violence. So in other words, the argument that “Gamers Will Soon Become War-Freak Adults” was just a politician’s attempt to blame gaming for something the society does not want to blame on them (the politicians).
